New Life, New Learning

There’s been a real buzz of excitement at Cambian Great Dunmow School over the past two  weeks, and it’s been coming from somewhere very small, fluffy, and surprisingly very loud!

As part of a hands-on science and wellbeing experience, our students have taken part in the  ‘Living Eggs – Ready to Hatch’ programme, giving them the unique opportunity to observe  the journey from egg to chick right in front of their eyes.

Over the course of the project, students carefully watched as fertilised eggs developed  inside a specialist incubator, building anticipation day by day. When hatching finally began,  it was nothing short of magical, with students witnessing new life emerging in real time. The experience has provided far more than just a science lesson.

It has supported:

• Understanding of life cycles and biology

• Curiosity, observation and questioning skills

• Emotional development, empathy and nurturing behaviours

• Calm engagement and shared positive experiences

For many of our students, this type of experiential learning is incredibly powerful. Watching  and caring for the chicks created moments of calm, connection and genuine joy.

The project also linked directly to curriculum learning, with structured resources supporting  science, literacy and discussion-based activities throughout the two-week programme.

One student summed it up perfectly:

“I’ve never seen something like that before… it was actually amazing.”

The chicks are now thriving, and the experience has left a lasting impression on both students and staff alike.

At Cambian Great Dunmow School, we are always looking for meaningful ways to bring learning to life and this has been a perfect example of how powerful those moments can be.
