The iStart Programme

iSTART is a flexible 6–12-week induction programme designed to support each learner’s transition into life at Spring Hill School. Its purpose is to ensure we truly understand every learner who joins us – not just academically, but as a whole person.

During iSTART, we take time to get to know each learner’s interests, strengths, aspirations and areas of development. A range of assessments helps us understand where learners are working academically so we can identify the most appropriate learning pathway, begin to bridge any gaps in knowledge, and plan effectively before they transition into their core class groups. We also explore what learners hope to achieve during their time at Spring Hill.

A strong emphasis is placed on developing social communication skills and building positive relationships with peers and staff. Learners are given opportunities to experience a broad range of lessons, including forest school, art, cooking, humanities, enterprise, textiles and horticulture. These experiences help inform personalised timetable choices as learners begin to transition out of the iSTART programme.

Transition is carefully tailored to the individual. It takes place at a pace that suits each learner and always begins with a subject or activity they are motivated by, helping to build confidence and promote success from the outset.

Throughout iSTART, learners have access to the clinical team, allowing us to develop a comprehensive understanding of their needs and identify appropriate interventions early. By the time learners are ready to move on from iSTART, staff are able to provide a detailed and informed handover, ensuring consistency and best practice support. This approach underpins a smooth transition and sets the foundations for a positive and successful experience within the wider school environment.

The report was lovely to read as [my son] does seem to be pushing himself outside his comfort zone.

Rebound Therapy

Rebound Therapy is delivered either by Jolene Byrne Thrive Practitioner, or by Lizzie Sykes, our Occupational Therapist. Jolene offers Rebound Therapy as part of the iSTART programme for our new starters, supporting their transition into school through movement‑based regulation and relational connection. Rebound is also available to all students, either as part of their timetabled provision, as a movement break, or as a lunchtime activity.

Through Rebound Therapy, students can work towards Winstrada Levels 1–3, gaining a sense of achievement while developing physical skills such as balance, coordination, muscle tone, and body awareness. Emotionally, the rhythmic movement and co‑regulation support help build confidence, self‑esteem, and improved self‑regulation.

The sessions also promote communication and social interaction, and can strengthen rapport between students and staff. Rebound Therapy provides a calm, shared space for restorative work, offering opportunities for movement while creating time to talk.

Joint interventions are also embedded into sessions such as Thrive strategies or Occupational Therapy targets ensuring each session is purposeful, therapeutic, and tailored to individual developmental needs.
